Happy Birthday to the Internet

Today, as we celebrate the Internet’s birthday, I’m reminded of how that invisible web of connection first began—and how its purpose continues to unfold in ways both human and divine.
Fifty-six years ago today, a quiet miracle of connection was born.

On October 29, 1969, dedicated civil servants and military personnel at what was then called ARPA, now DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency,) sent the very first digital message from a computer at UCLA to one at Stanford University. Only a few characters appeared on the screen before the system crashed, but that brief moment marked the birth of the Internet.
Originally designed as the ARPANET, a Defense Department project intended to help researchers share data, it was the seed of something far greater than anyone could have imagined. What began as a technical experiment soon became a living network that now connects billions of people across the planet.

Yet beneath the technology, I see something even more profound: a reflection of our shared human longing to connect. The same invisible energy that flows between friends, families, and communities also flows through the digital web that links our world.
The Internet, at its best, embodies the spirit of collaboration, creativity, and compassion. It allows us to share ideas, build community, and express our common humanity across every boundary. The same universal energy that connects our souls also animates this global network—what I often call spiritual technology.
As we celebrate this milestone, may we remember the quiet dedication of those early innovators and the intention behind their work: to connect, to communicate, and to create. May we continue to use this extraordinary gift not only to exchange information, but to expand consciousness and build a more compassionate, connected world.
